Week 1B- Aug. 28

Today in class, we went over a PDF called "Shapes on a Page," which basically went over the different layout designs for a publication. Then, we were asked to use the glyph we found last class and incorporate it into our own layouts based on the ones we learned which are being drawn onto 8 pieces of 8.5x11" paper cut in half with double pages.
The different layouts that we went over were:

• Grouping
• Perimeter
• Horizontal
• Vertical
• Broadside
• Angular
• Axis-oriented
• Passepartout

Week 1A-Aug 26

First Day of Class

Today in class we mostly went over the syllabus and went over the class rules, requirements, grading policy, class expectations, etc. We were then assigned during class to look for an interesting glyph and write at least 400 words explaining things like what it would wear, how it would talk, where it would hang out, and basically an entire background of the glyph (seen in Week 1A- Outside of Class).

Week 1 Outside of Class

             What I like most about this glyph is that it is in the shape of a heart, with a fancy embellishment coming out of it. It reminds me in a way of a very elegant symbol to represent a company. I would imagine that it would have a very loving personality, being that part of it resembles the shape of a heart, and would be very sophisticated as well as intelligent. This glyph would also be a tall, rather husky male, about middle aged and rather jolly. If the glyph were to be alive, it would talk very elegantly in a strong British accent, and say things like “top of the morning!” or “anyone care for a spot of tea?” This glyph would wear a black suit with thin white pin stripes and a long tail and have one of those eye glasses that you hold up to one eye called a monocle and his balding raven black hair slicked back very neatly. His shoes would be perfectly shined and polished without a single scuff-mark on it, and one of his hands would sport a nifty looking wooden cane to add to his fanciness. Let’s not forget the fancy black and purple top hat that sits on top of his head, slightly tilted. He would be very generous with his money, being that he is a very wealthy man who inherited the money from his family who owns one of the biggest tea companies in all of Britain, which is a big deal. He would mostly hang out with his other fancy friends at parties and non-profit events where he would donate huge amounts of money to help those in need. In his free time he enjoys working at the local food kitchens and reading to the blind. He is also a very devoted father and husband, and would give the shirt off of his back to help somebody on the street. Mr. Glyph Wellington III graduated at the top of his class in high school, but instead of going to college, he immediately took over his family’s tea business and made it even more successful than ever. Not only does he have a lot of money, but he has the intelligence and big heart to support it and influence him to use it wisely. So, if this glyph were to in fact be human, my representation of him would be sophisticated, intelligent and caring.
